History is more than just a list of dates, events and names of dead people! History is a chance to understand our present through our past. It helps us understand why nations are the way they are today, why politics is such an important part of Maltese way of life, and why it is important to be an active participant in today’s political decisions that will shape our future. It is the study of how real people lived, what challenges they had to face, and why they made certain choices that affect us (positively and negatively) today. History teaches you how to gather and read different kinds of information, how to look carefully at this information, and check it for bias and propaganda. You learn how to read maps, graphs and other diagrams. It also teaches you to express yourself and build arguments about decisions people made in the past. Studying history
During Form 1 students will learn about how to study history and where one can obtain information about the part we will study Maltese ancient history from prehistory to the end of the Roman Empires while Form 2 the curriculum focuses on the Middle Ages. From form 3 to 5 students will learn about Maltese and European History from the 16th up to the end of the 20th century. Students will become aware of how modern society developed, what the French Revolution was all about, who Napoleon was and how Italy and Germany came about. We will learn why the First and Second World Wars broke out and why Germany was divided in two for more than forty years, why Russia was called USSR and why Yugoslavia is no more. Malta under the Knights of St John, and the French and British occupation will also be tackled. Moreover, the student will understand better how Malta fared in the Second World War and after, what were the political discussions in favor and against independence, and what was the role of politicians who are still active today. We will do this through discussions, role plays, original video footage, documentaries, field visits and newspapers.
