Maths Olympiad

OUR EXPERIENCE IN THE MATHEMATICS OLYMPIAD

This year there was the fifth edition of the Malta Mathematics Olympiad.  Owen Parnis, Carl Camilleri and Brandon Seychell represented our school, under the supervision of our Mathematics teacher Mr. Johann Chetcuti.  The Mathematics Olympiad was held on the 12th of March, 2009, at St. Ignatius College GJL, Blata l-Bajda.

Thirty schools from around the Maltese islands took part in this competition, each school represented by three students.  The competition was split into three parts; the first section was one which all the students had to work out individually.  This section lasted 45 minutes.  This was followed by a 15-minute break during which all the students could discuss the paper with their teachers.  Afterwards there were another two sections, but this time the school participated as a team.  Each of these sections was then followed by a break.

While the last questions were being corrected, there was a show of magic by a Mathematics teacher.  The show was very entertaining.  After the show ended, it was time for the rewards.  Everyone was anxious to see who had won.  Savio College won both the team and the individual prizes.  We, successfully, clinched the fourth place overall.  It was a once in a lifetime experience which will serve us well in our future, and even though we didn’t win, we still gave it our best shot and had fun.
